For the quilter who is comfortable with their stitching but would like to take it to the next level: practice the stitches Barb uses to add depth and dimension to her fiber art pieces while completing the head and upper torso of the Great Blue Heron. Topics covered include what thread to use and when, order of quilting, using a hoop, outlining, machine needles, and transferring images. Barb will also discuss how to make the piece two-sided. On day two, students will have more time to work on the Heron, and start working on a butterfly sampler using one of Barb’s favorite stitches, Pebbles.

This graphic quilt is composed of 25 blocks made from a variety of stripes, batiks, and hand dyes. The design is the result of a nifty construction technique: From one lighter and one darker strip, you create six quarter-units—three with the stripes on the outside and three with the stripes on the inside.

You’ll then combine four units to make each block. Alternating the blocks establishes a kind of in-and-out visual rhythm.

This technique class is all about having fun with fabric. Curved seams will be part of the technique utilized. The swirling circles all start with the “four-patch posie” stacked method of cutting. Solids, or fabrics that read as a solid, create a bold backdrop that shows off quilting stitches and any embellishments added!

On day two, explore the “finishing” of your quilt top – how and what to embellish and what to use for embellishment. Bring some embroidery floss, beads, pearl cotton, buttons, and hand sewing needles to put some fine touches on the surface of this fun and simple quilt. This is a very serendipitous class – be prepared to make decisions and change them!

There will be demonstrations on layering a quilt, discussion on choosing the correct batting for your project, and methods of safety pinning, spray glue, and thread basting. This quilt design uses Karin’s ever popular “Exploding Pineapple” technique. If you have never tried her unique method then this is the class for you! You will be amazed at how simple fabric squares can be sewn into pineapple patchwork.

Karin does not use traditional paper foundation piecing or special rulers. ‘Woolies’ cotton flannel fabrics have been used to create a warm, cuddly feel – other flannel or brushed cotton fabrics will give a similar texture.
