Learn to paint, compose, and construct airy patchwork compositions using luscious silk organza. We will begin by painting the silk and proceed to the design wall, where new colors and shapes will emerge as the translucent fabrics are layered. Next we’ll explore different construction techniques as we compare the look of raw edges produced by fusing and hand and machine stitching and the look of finished edges produced by tucks and french seams. We will also experiment with traditional and adapted ways to construct the seams used to make pojagi, Korean wrapping cloths.

This class combines painting and quilting. Using acrylic paint, we will create layers of imagery onto thin canvas; applying fused fabrics and many layers of thin, fluid acrylic paint. A color scheme is chosen and two to three canvases are painted within that color scheme. Then these canvases are cut apart and combined to create a complex composition. The reconstructed canvas is then layered with batting and backing and stitched. These stitched pieces can then be stretched on a frame ready to hang or inserted into a quilt of the same design to create a many textured creation.

Sue designed this needle case for a class that she taught at Primitives of the Midwest in Missouri. It is made from hand-dyed wool, velvet, dupioni silk, and a Japanese polka dot fabric.

On the inside is a velvet bird pincushion, needle case, two zipper pockets, a thread holder, and a scissor holder. It is embellished with ribbons, beads, buttons, wool roving balls, and finished with a hand stamped label.
