433 - THE QUILTERS OF GEE’S BEND
Thursday, July 9 – 7:00 pm
SISTERS HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM
$20
| |
Over the years, the women of Gee’s Bend have
developed a bold and distinctive style of quilting
based on traditional American (and African
American) quilts, but with a geometric simplicity
reminiscent of Amish quilts and modern art.
They have passed their skills and aesthetic down
through at least six generations to the present
day. Join seven of the quilters of Gee's Bend as
they show some of their quilts and speak about
the tradition of quilting in Gee's Bend, Alabama.
Called the poorest community in America in the
1940's, the caramel soil of the rural South
inspired generations of women of The Bend to
create an indigenous style of quilting–bold,
geometric patterns out of old britches, cornmeal
sacks, Sears corduroy swatches, and hand-me-down
leisure suits–whatever happened to be
around. The quilts provided comfort and
warmth, but also became declarations of style
and independence.
Their quilts have appeared in The Whitney
Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of
Fine Arts, Boston; The deYoung Museum, San
Francisco; and the Tacoma Art Museum in Tacoma.
Participants Show & Tell - (before the lecture)
Quilter’s Affair participants are invited to share their Quilter’s Affair quilts & projects with the audience.
Sorry, this program is Sold Out.
The Ladies of Gee's Bend will be teaching several workshops during Quilt Show week, July 8-10, 2009.

The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, in partnership with Heritage Theater Company, presents QUILTERS,
a Broadway musical that garnered six Tony
nominations in 1985 and has remained a favorite
in regional theatres ever since. As homesteader
Sarah prepares a legacy quilt for her daughters, a
patchwork of stories comes to life inspired by her
quilting patterns. Seven actresses in multiple roles
portray scenes ranging from humorous to
dramatically intense as the spirit of pioneer
women and the historical role of quilting are
celebrated in drama, dance, and song.
The quilt blocks created by Central Oregon
quilters for each scene of the production will be
sold and the money raised, along with proceeds
from ticket sales, will be donated to Sisters
Family Access Network.
