Patty Hawkins
Patty is an art quilter who finds glorious fun in fabric dyeing and believes in the Wabi Sabi mind set of “seeing beauty in imperfection.” With an unpredictable silk-screen approach, Patty creates her own scarred aspen tree bark fabric using shibori pole wrap dyeing techniques. Her unique fabrics give rise to her fabric collages, which resemble the landscape of her Colorado home. Patty finds inspiration in the lights and shadows of each day, the changing seasons of the aspen trees, reflection “scribbles” and of course the amazing colors and formations of the majestic Rocky Mountains. See Patty’s nature-inspired gallery of work on her website at www.pattyhawkins.com

Begin by writing a Haiku to “introduce” yourself to your subject. Invite your mind to relax and be creative, sharing nature’s tranquility through your work. Students will create a fused composition landscape inspired by personal photo images, with colors and shapes that capture attention. Through various exercises, students will learn to create depth in a landscape using many values within a limited palette and adding a few “zinger” accent colors. Design elements will be discussed to bring the viewer’s eye into your art quilt.

Design and create your own vision of a town, neighborhood, village, cityscape or skyline. Detect common visual elements, highlight details, create building blocks and put them all together using improvisational piecing techniques. Add character to your town by experimenting with different surface design techniques (add texture, discharge color, and incorporate 3-D elements). Consider creating an irregularly shaped piece and finish off your work with an elegant facing technique. |
