2012 ART QUILT SYMPOSIUM
with Sue Benner & Gloria Loughman
September 24-28, 2012 |
Sue Benner
Sue Benner’s educational background started in molecular
biology and ended with a master’s degree in biomedical illustration.
She became a studio artist in 1980, working primarily in the style
that later became known as the Art Quilter. She has been an innovator
in the field of surface design, using original dyed and painted fabrics, textile
collage, and fused quilt construction to create her award winning quilts. Sue’s
work has been juried into Quilt National seven times and she served as a juror in
2009. Although Sue lives in Dallas, Texas, her heart still resides in her home state
of Wisconsin.
Driven to Abstraction
At FivePine Lodge
$495
(includes lunches)
Monday-Friday, September 24-28, 2012
9-4 pm |
 |
The exploration of abstraction, both objective and
non-objective, in the art quilt medium is the theme of this
workshop. Sue will present several methods for developing
abstract imagery and encourage students to more
deeply explore their own personal interests, style, and
process. Through exercises, slide shows, and individual
discussions, each student will create a series of works
based on source materials brought to class for inspiration.
Instruction on using fusible collage as the construction technique will be presented,
but these concepts can be applied to other techniques as well. This workshop
combines two levels, intermediate and advanced (advanced students who have
taken Sue’s abstraction class before may choose to work more independently, but
still under Sue’s guidance.) This is a great workshop for pushing your creativity to
the next level.

Gloria Loughman
Gloria Loughman lives on the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula, in
Victoria, Australia. She began quilting 20 years ago while recovering
from a course of chemotherapy. What began as therapy has
developed into a passion and given Gloria the opportunity to travel
the world teaching classes and exhibiting quilts. After completing studies in
design and color as part of a Diploma of Art in 1996, Gloria started making the
large vivid landscapes of the Australian Bush, for which she has become famous.
Her quilt “Kimberley Mystique” was the winner of Australia’s most prestigious
national quilting award in 2003. Gloria has had two books published by C&T:
Luminous Landscapes in 2007 and Quilted Symphony in 2010.
Multiple Images in the Landscape
At FivePine Lodge
$495
(includes lunches)
Monday-Friday, September 24-28, 2012
9-4 pm |
Students will build up a landscape design that
contains two or more landscape images. There are many
ways of doing this: one image with a change of value,
color or style, multiple images within one border or a
scene with close up images of some sections inserted.
Basic design principles will be discussed with information
provided on combining multiple images. Then
students will design their own wall hanging working from
a photo, sketch or picture. Color combinations will be discussed and students will
work through a series of color exercises.
|

|
Once the design is formalized, students will go on to construct the various sections
of their quilt and finally put these sections together. The surface of the
quilt can be decorated using machine appliqué and embroidery. Fabric painting
techniques will be demonstrated and participants will be able to hand paint fabric
for special areas such as sky, water, etc.
Sorry, this class is currently full,
but we are taking names for the waiting list.
