Fire Light

This wonderfully rich quilt is made by sewing
randomly cut strips of fabric on a foundation and
then playing with color and texture in putting them all
together. Janet’s sample is made from a variety of
fabric including African fabric. Every quilt is different.
Sharing fabrics is encouraged and fabric that Janet
purchased in Africa will be shared with the class. This
quilt design is inspired by Razzle Dazzle Quilts by
Judy Hooworth.

Learn to make the Ribbons and Waves unit that
serves as the basic building block for any number of
different quilts. In class you will have your choice of
three different designs (Running Waters, Garden Gate,
and Color Gradations) - or you can use the blocks you
make to design your own one-of-a kind wall hanging
or small quilt. The first class session will cover cutting
and construction techniques. In the second session
you will complete a layout, assemble the blocks, and
discuss quilting and finishing options. Once you learn
to make Ribbon and Waves units, you will be tempted
to explore many other design options. Bet you can’t

imagery to your quilts. We will use digital brushes
and fabric paint to jazz up our backgrounds, and then

Pick your favorite theme fabric to use for the
large diagonal strip (refer to the photo) in this quilt.
Large half-square triangle blocks are pieced and fill
the other diagonal rows in the quilt. The theme fabric
becomes the basis for selecting fabrics for the background
and the triangles used in these blocks. The
96L Omnigrid half-square triangle ruler will be used
in this class. A great opportunity to learn how to use
one -- or if you know how it is used, you’ll get to use it
more and more!

Star of the Orient

Making this spinning star quilt isn’t nearly as difficult
as it looks! You’ll learn how to make the stars
spin with no templates (well, hardly any), no “Y” seams,
and a few tricks for effective piecing. We’ll discuss
color placement, value, and several finishing techniques
for borders. This makes a great scrappy quilt
or stunning two-color quilt.

What are my Basic Sewing
Supplies (BSS)?
BSS includes sewing machine in good working
order, rotary cutter, cutting mat, ruler, scissors, tape
measure, pencil, pins, and seam ripper.
How do I rate my Skill Level?
(Sewing)
Beginning: Little or no experience with quilt making.
Advanced Beginning: Experience with a rotary cutter and piecing.
Intermediate: Comfortable with interpreting patterns and designs.
Advanced: Comfortable with all levels of designing, sewing,
and creating quilts.
(Knitting/Crochet)
Beginning: Little or no experience knitting or
crocheting.
Advanced Beginning: Experience with the following: knit and purl, cast
on and bind off, increase/decrease stitches,
and knitting in the round. Ability to read simple
patterns and an understanding of making and
calculating gauge samples. Knowledge of simple
pattern stitches is very helpful.
Use of double pointed needles and basic finishing
techniques are also helpful.
Intermediate: Ability to read and understand
moderately complex patterns – such as garments – and experience with simple color changes.
Knowledge of cable stitches, beginning lace
stitches, the ability to short row and experience
with a three needle bind-off are recommended.
Advanced: Experience with adjusting and adapting
patterns, gauge, and size. Also an understanding
of knitting and crocheting terminology
(abbreviations), and interpreting stitch charts.
Experience with Fairisle, Intarsia, Entrelac, Aran,
and Kitchner stitches is also recommended.
