outside the lines workshop with jean wellsOutside The Lines

Jean Wells Keenan
$60
Saturday, October 1 8:30-2:30
& Sunday, October 2 9:30-3:30

The quilts from Gee's Bend have fascinated me since I first saw them. They are the inspiration for this workshop. Working intuitively is a fun approach to quilt design and can produce astounding results. In this workshop we will explore design options as well as techniques with some exercises and then participate in a discussion on color. The rest of the time will be spent on your own exploration into working "Outside the Lines". Your challenge will be to work in a color palette new to you and to explore design. Refer to my books Journey to Inspired Art Quilting and Intuitive Color and Design for ideas.

Sue Spargo / Tonye Belinda Phillips

October 15 - 19, 2016

sue saprgo & tonye phillips

Sue Spargo was born in Zambia, raised in South Africa, and later moved to England. This shift between two very different environments and cultures has inspired many of her designs. Sue is particularly influenced by the energy and color of traditional African designs. All these early experiences combined to stir her love of "primitive" arts and crafts, and grew into a focus on folk-art. Sue now lives in the United States, where she has met many wonderful quilt enthusiasts who have added abundantly to her knowledge and creativity.

Tonye Belinda Phillips is a quilt designer living and creating in Camp Sherman, Oregon. Tonye's work is bright, colorful and whimsical. She has always loved the folk art style with a contemporary twist. Tonye works mainly in 100% cotton fabrics but likes to experiment with other fibers too. Her biggest love is needle-turn appliqué, which you will find consistently on most of her quilts. Her first book, Hand Appliquéd Quilts, Whimsical Designs & Simple Techniques, was published in 2008.

Please Note: Sue will be unavailable this October, so Tonye will be teaching in her place.

The block was stimulated by the historic 54-40 or Fight block that dates from the 1846 boundary dispute between Great Britain and America. You will learn to use the "V-Block Trimmer," a trim-down ruler from Studio 180 Design that makes easy work of the triangular units for the trees and border. Block sizes are 24", 18" or 12".
