Love of fabric began at an early age for David as he collected tiny scraps of fabric from his mother’s sewing area. In 1999, he designed his first quilt. After a visit to Houston in 2001, David’s love of fabric turned into a full-blown obsession for quilting as art. Following a 25-year career as a graphic designer, David has exhibited his work internationally and has received several prestigious awards for quilting. Now residing in Steamboat Springs, CO, David teaches at numerous venues throughout the United States. View more of David’s work at his website: www.davidtaylorquilts.com.

City Livin'
with Tonye Belinda Phillips
November 14, 2013 |
Tonye is a quilt designer living and creating in Camp Sherman, Oregon.
She also maintains a studio in Sisters, Oregon, where she is only a couple of blocks away from the Stitchin’ Post. This makes things very handy, indeed, as she teaches several classes at the shop. Tonye’s work is bright, colorful and whimsical. One of her primary goals is to make people smile. She has always loved the folk art style with a contemporary twist. Tonye works mainly in 100% cotton fabrics but likes to experiment with other fibers too. Her biggest love is needle-turn appliqué, which you will find consistently on most of her quilts. Her first book, “Hand Appliquéd Quilts, Whimsical Designs & Simple Techniques”, was published in 2008.

Livin’ it up in the city...think high-rise and high fun! This project is full of crazy, wonky machine piecing, a touch of needle-turn appliqué and a bit of wool appliqué. There are lots of snazzy, bright, colorful fabrics to choose from these days and mixing in some black and white always insures a bit of drama.

Imperial Blooms
with Sue Spargo
November 18 & 19, 2013 |
Southern Africa has had a considerable influence on Sue’s life and creativity. Sue was born in Zambia and then, in the nearby country of South Africa, she received her education, trained to be a nurse, and later moved to England; this shift between two very different environments and cultures inspired many of her designs. Sue is particularly influenced by the energy and color of traditional African designs. All these early experiences combined to stir her love of “primitive” arts and crafts and grew into a focus on folk-art. Sue’s dream of living in the United States was fulfilled in 1989, when she moved to Connecticut and subsequently to Tennessee, Utah and Ohio. Each new State presented sharp contrasts and stirred new ideas. With each move she met many new and wonderful quilt enthusiasts who have added abundantly to her knowledge and creativity.
Imperial Blooms

Monday & Tuesday, November 18 & 19, 2013

Sue will demonstrate sewing techniques for hand-dyed wool, cottons and silk velvets as well as unique embellishment stitches using fibers, ribbons and beads. Students will make one or two blocks while exploring many creative ways to interpret flowers, leaves and stems. Wool is a fabulous medium to work with; the texture and dimension you can achieve will astound you!
